Reduce. Replace. Recover.

Most cybersecurity frameworks are built for people who already work in security, dense and hard to hand to a business owner and expect action. The 3Rs framework, Reduce, Replace, Recover, is different. Three words, easy to remember, and it covers the full arc of risk.

Reduce means shrinking your attack surface. Every unused account, forgotten piece of software, and stale access permission is a liability sitting there for no benefit. Go in and clean it up.

Replace means retiring outdated or unsupported systems for something that can actually be secured. Legacy software that no longer gets security updates is one of the most preventable sources of serious breaches. It also applies to weak authentication, replacing passwords alone with MFA or passkeys.

Recover means having a real, tested plan for after something goes wrong. A plan nobody has tested is not much better than no plan at all. This is the step most often skipped, because it feels like planning for failure. It is actually what keeps a bad day from becoming a catastrophic one.

This framework is also repeatable. Attack surfaces grow back, systems age out, and recovery plans need retesting as things change.

Two things worth doing this week:

Start with Reduce, it is usually the fastest of the three to make real progress on.

Do this today. If you have a backup or recovery plan, actually test it. Restore something and see if it works the way you assume.

Stay inside the line.
