fxt_seriesAvere Tiered NAS Appliances: Record-Setting Performance and a 5:1 Reduction in Disks, Power, and Rack Space.

Avere FXT 2300 and 2500 Series hardware platforms provide the high-performance storage media that enables Avere tiered NAS appliances to accelerate the performance and reduce the cost of NAS environments.

The performance of current generation network attached storage (NAS) is limited by the quantity and performance of the attached disk drives. For even modest application performance requirements, this limitation results in costly over-provisioning of storage capacity, inefficient use of limited data center space, and wasted power consumption.

The Avere FXT Series of tiered NAS appliances separates data delivery from data retention and more efficiently delivers both. Active client data is stored and accessed on a cluster of FXT appliances optimized for performance. Inactive data is stored on a traditional NAS system (in Avere terms, the mass storage system) optimized for storage capacity. System performance scales by adding appliances to the FXT cluster and capacity scales by adding disk storage to the mass storage system.

Avere Tiered NAS appliances enable the best of both worlds, the performance of SSD and the cost of SATA.

The Avere FXT Series provides performance acceleration for any application workload mix including reads, writes, and metadata operations. The FXT Series supports up to 25 appliances per cluster and linearly scales to millions of operations/sec performance and tens of gigabytes/sec throughput.

Avere solutions are highly efficient; the total equipment deployed is typically one-fifth of traditional NAS deployments, resulting in dramatic savings in rack space and power/cooling costs. For existing NAS deployments, the Avere FXT Series enables administrators to dramatically increase the performance of their system without adding storage. For new deployments, the FXT Series enables administrators to meet their performance requirements with the highest possible storage density on the mass storage system using low-cost, high-capacity SATA drives.

Simplicity
Introduction of an FXT cluster into existing data center applications is fast, simple and requires no changes to the application servers and clients or mass storage system. Visibility into the operations of the Avere cluster, application servers and clients, and mass storage system is provided by a wealth of statistics and graphical display on the Avere Control Panel.

High Availability
Avere clusters provide N+1 protection to ensure data remains available in the event of a failure. Integrated NVRAM provides high-performance and persistent write operations. FXT appliances are highly reliable and provide redundant network ports and power.

FXT Series hardware platforms are highly reliable and offered in multiple configuration options.

High-Performance Storage Media
Each FXT Series hardware platform contains DRAM, NVRAM, and 15k SAS HDDs to accelerate the performance of active data. The most active data is stored in the 64GB bank of DRAM within each FXT appliance. Write performance is accelerated and protected by 1GB of NVRAM provided per appliance. Each appliance contains 8 15k SAS HDDs to support large application working sets.

Hardware Configurations
FXT Series hardware platforms are compact, highly reliable, and provide redundant network ports and power. The FXT Series is offered in two models, FXT 2300 and FXT 2500.

FXT 2300 contains eight 146GB 15k SAS drives and supports an application working set of 1TB usable per appliance and up to 25TB usable per cluster.

FXT 2500 contains eight 450GB 15k SAS drives and supports an application working set of 3TB usable per appliance and up to 75TB usable per cluster.

FXT 2700 contains eight 64GB SLC Flash SSDs and supports an application working set of 512GB raw per appliance and up to 13TB raw per cluster.

Avere OS is the engine that powers the FXT Series of NAS appliances. Avere OS provides dynamic tiering for optimal data placement across multiple storage tiers, performance acceleration for any application workload, and clustering for performance scaling and availability. Avere OS support for industry standard protocols, an intuitive user interface, and policy-based management enable the FXT Series to seamlessly fit into existing environments.

Dynamic Tiering

Avere OS dynamically tiers data by intelligently and automatically moving it to the optimal storage tier based on business demand. It stores active data on the internal SSD and HDD media and manages the placement of inactive data on the mass storage system. Allocation algorithms constantly monitor data access patterns and actively manage data placement to increase performance, distribute workload in the cluster, and minimize accesses to the mass storage system.

Performance Acceleration

Avere OS accelerates performance for any application workload without adding servers or disks to the mass storage system. It takes ownership of heavily accessed files and accelerates all operations to those files including reads, writes, file attribute updates, and other metadata operations.

Clustering

Linear performance scaling and high availability are provided by the clustering capability of Avere OS. Up to 25 FXT appliances can be clustered, delivering up to millions of operations/sec performance and tens of gigabytes/sec throughput. Avere OS coherently and automatically balances active data across all FXT appliances in the cluster enabling all resources to be used as a shared, scalable pool. N+1 high availability protection ensures that data is available in the event of a power, network, or system failure.

Seamlessly Fit In Existing Environments

Avere OS provides NFSv3 and CIFS file access interfaces to support applications running on Linux, Unix, Windows, and Mac servers and clients and NFSv3 to support leading mass storage systems. Simple installation, configuration, and monitoring are provided by an intuitive user interface and industry-standard SNMP support. Integrated policy-based management ensures that FXT appliances operate synchronously with existing data protection procedures (e.g. backup, mirroring) running on the mass storage system.
